Homeschooling math can be a challenging subject for many parents. Below you’ll find all of our posts related to teaching math.

Homeschooling math contains so many different concepts to teach, and within each concept is a sequence of learning.

These are the overall concepts your child needs to be exposed to. Every good math curriculum will cover these in detail.

  • Number Sense and Place Value
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Generate and Analyze Patterns
  • Decimals
  • Negative Numbers
  • Fractions
  • Measurement
  • Time
  • Represent and Interpret Data
  • Money
  • Shapes and Attributes

Within each of the above concepts, there are a variety of skills. For example, within fractions, your child will develop an understanding of fractions, but will also add, subtract, multiple, and divide. Fractions are also introduced in measurements and ratios.

With reading and writing, there is a definitive stage of development that goes from pre-reading/writing to fluent reading/writing. There is no overall stage of development for math, but instead, you can find this within each of the concepts above.

As you begin your search for a math curriculum, you’ll run across several terms that are only used to describe math curriculum.

Mastery- Focuses on one topic at a time

Spiral- Teaches skills in small chunks and rotates more frequently through the topics

Conceptual- Focus on the why

Procedural- Focus on the how

When choosing a curriculum for homeschooling math, you want to make sure it has a healthy mix of all of these methods, but most importantly the skills should naturally build on top of each other.
